I will not let an exam result decide my fate
Exam season is upon us- which means two things: late nights and compulsive worrying. No matter how much revision you say you've done, you never really feel fully satisfied (well, I for certain). However it never fails to aggravate me how exams are society's judge of how intellectual an individual is. I have sat in lessons with students who are far more intellectual than me, engaging in conversations I would never be able to partake in. Yet when they receive a grade C, and I a grade B they are seen as the 'weaker' student with less opportunities in life.
Of course, as a substitute for exams you get the typical vocational subjects, yet even they are frowned upon. With all the above said, I don't think there'll ever be a change. Exams are the most convenient and standardized way to test ones ability and that's not going to change anytime soon.
Secondary schooling doesn't give you any real insight into what your capable of beyond books and tests. They try to fit you into a small box without thinking about what other talents you may have. It's ridiculous. The worst part being that in the space of a few months, you have to decide what you want to do with your life, in terms of having a career. They should focus on strengths and not conforming the masses.
ReplyDeletehigh school is the last time grades determine how amazing you are, university is another ball game. You may suck at math but be a hella good accountant. Things are never what they appear to be. No judging, just you being you - That's university.
Great post ♥

Exactly! In the post I was quite restrictive to just the UK but it's fascinating that it's a worldwide issue. I have a year and a third left to go for university and I'm really looking forward to the flexibility. I think what's most sad is that I don't think it's ever going to change. Unless someone creates a new method that blows all factors of the current exam model out of the water. (Fingers crossed!)
DeleteThanks for your response. Sending love from across the pond :-)
I couldn't agree more. I was just casually browsing through your older posts and came across this one which I actually read last year, and which inspired me to write one similar. I recall wanting to comment at the time, but never actually doing so because I was so new to blogging! (The internet: Home to socially awkward individuals). Anyway, after having sat what will hopefully be my final set of exams EVER, I wanted to tell any current students to soldier on, it will be worth it!
